The Death of Jazz

Ms Yvonne Busch My Music Teacher

Ms Yvonne Busch 1929 – 2014

“Ms Busch was very disciplined in her teaching, but she was also very free, She really stressed paying attention to details. The smallest little detail in a piece of music is the thing that makes it go from good to being great. As a professional musician, I took those lessons to heart. If a student had problems, you could talk to her, and she would try to put you on the right path”

Born in New Orleans in 1929 and raised in the historic Treme section of the city, Ms Yvonne Busch who mastered several brass instruments and the woodwinds, became a touring professional by the age of 12, crisscrossing the United States as a member of the critically acclaimed “International Sweethearts of Rhythm” and the “Swinging Rays of Rhythm” two all-female bands sponsored by the Piney Woods Country Life School, an historic African-American boarding school located in Piney Woods, Mississippi.

With Herlin Riley, drums; Emmet Cohen, piano; Russell Hall, bass Veteran drummer and founding Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Herlin Riley has been the drummer of choice for bandleaders such as Ahmad Jamal and Wynton Marsalis. Riley’s sound is rooted in his home of New Orleans, but his rhythmic vocabulary expands miles beyond any one style or location. At Dizzy’s, he will demonstrate his skills as bandleader, with a quintet featuring some of the best young talent in New York. Riley’s group includes pianist Emmet Cohen and bassist Russell Hall, two young players in high-demand among Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members and other high-profile artists. Groove comes first when Riley is on drums, and these performances are going to be a good time!

Herlin Riley and Erica Falls

On Thurs. 7/25/13 at 8pm and 10pm its going to be

Jazz Drummer
& Erica Falls/Vocalist

I love to be able to use superlatives and without reservation I can tell you that this is going to be a double dose of wonderful.

Herlin Riley
makes a drum set talk. His rhythmic sense is amazing as he seems to effortlessy intertwine down beats, back beats, rolls, riffs, the brightness of cymbals and even African sequences in a way that is seamless. Listening to him is an education in what is possible on a drumset. And he has so much fun doing it that he is infectious and extremely engaging and entertaining, and Herlin Riley always rolls with top shelf musicians. (Donald Ramsey already told me he’s on bass that night… another rhythm master.)

Boo and I planned to go even before we found out that he was going to have Erica Falls as featured vocalist, Erica is a singer we will show up for when she is the only attraction. If you have never heard this woman perform you will be blown away and if you have, you know what I’m talking about. Serious about her art with the gift of voice and versatile moving all around R&B, Jazz, Blues and Neo-Soul. Let me put it this way when Erica leaves it all on the stage she is the kind of singer no one would want to follow, and she always leaves it all on stage.

Sorry if you can’t make it… poor thing!
