Jazz at the Rat featuring A Tribute to Idris Muhammad
Date: Thursday, October 16, 2014
Time: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Building: Lavin-Bernick Center (LBC), Der Rathskeller/City Diner

The Next Generation Band, featuring special guests Herlin Riley (drums, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) and Sam Williams (trombone, Big Sam’s Funky Nation), will pay tribute to the legendary New Orleans-born and internationally revered drummer who passed away this past July at the age of 74. From playing with early R&B and rock ‘n roll greats in the 1950s, to becoming an in-demand jazz and soul session drummer and band leader in the 1960s and 1970s, to being sampled by scores of hip hop artists, Muhammad is, as described by WWOZ FM’s George Ingmire, “on the Mount Rushmore of New Orleans drummers.”

Jazz at the Rat is a series of live concerts held on selected Thursday evenings at Der Rathskeller (a.k.a. “The Rat”) at Tulane. Curated by Jesse McBride, the series features performances by jazz legends and rising stars, comprising of both visiting artists and outstanding New Orleans-based musicians, accompanied by students and faculty from Tulane’s Jazz Studies program.

Ms Yvonne Busch My Music Teacher

By Busch

Ms-Busch
Ms Yvonne Busch 1929 – 2014

“Ms Busch was very disciplined in her teaching, but she was also very free, She really stressed paying attention to details. The smallest little detail in a piece of music is the thing that makes it go from good to being great. As a professional musician, I took those lessons to heart. If a student had problems, you could talk to her, and she would try to put you on the right path”

Born in New Orleans in 1929 and raised in the historic Treme section of the city, Ms Yvonne Busch who mastered several brass instruments and the woodwinds, became a touring professional by the age of 12, crisscrossing the United States as a member of the critically acclaimed “International Sweethearts of Rhythm” and the “Swinging Rays of Rhythm” two all-female bands sponsored by the Piney Woods Country Life School, an historic African-American boarding school located in Piney Woods, Mississippi.
